GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 16 • 2 In the two games, Purdue was outscored at the line 52-16. Against the fourth-ranked Badgers, Purdue was done in by what Painter called untimely de- fensive breakdowns and at least one "ill-advised shot." Otherwise … "Any time you go on the road and try to win games, especially against a very good team," Painter said, "you have to give yourself a chance. I thought we did that. Our effort was very good." Now, Purdue gets a week off be- fore heading to Penn State Saturday. It'll practice every day this week, a situation Painter likened to the holiday break that came be- tween Purdue losing its last three non-conference games and win- ning its first two Big Ten contests. "In a normal situation … you'd like to keep playing that Saturday- Wednesday (schedule)," Painter said. "But when you're a younger team, I thought the practices be- fore we started Big Ten play really helped us. I like this at this time for us. We have made progress, but we have to be mentally tougher and we have to do a better job of ex- ecuting down the stretch at both ends of the court. I think our mis- takes are very correctable. "When we've had practices with this group in succession, we've done better. Why that is, is that when you get away from those practices, you get away from drilling home what we have to do and that happens with youth. We have some young guys who play a lot. … You have to show your experience. If you don't have that experience, you have to show some toughness and maturity for a young guy to help your team win. But I like our pieces, I like our guys, and what we've struggled with, I think they're very correctable things. I'm happy we have some practices here." j Average Low The Boilermakers have had balanced scoring this year, with three players averaging double figures. But Kend- all Stephens' 10.9 scoring average is on pace to be the lowest average of a Boilermaker single-season scoring leader. Here's the list dating back to 1947-48: Kendall Stephens, 2015 10.9 Richard Axness, 1950 11.3 Terone Johnson, 2014 12.0 Weekly Pic Tom Campbell It was a slow walk across the Mackey Arena court for Basil Smotherman, Kendall Stephens, Vince Edwards and P.J.
