Purdue's freshman 7-foot-2 center isn't trying to be intentional with his physical play, but he seem- ingly can't stop being too aggressive and racking up whistles. It has happened con- sistently in Big Ten play After not having a foul in the league opener against Minnesota, Haas has 11 in the last three games. Against Maryland, he had four, and against Michigan he had four and played only nine minutes. Against Wisconsin, he had three but was whistled for a fla- grant-1 when an elbow clocked Frank Kaminsky. Coach Matt Painter wants Haas, who is about 300 pounds, to stay ag- gressive, but he also wants his big man to be smart. That means maybe post- ing up differently, going to get position and holding it for a bit and then re-posting instead of trying to battle with a defender for spacing, which can lead to fouls. After each game, Painter said he sits with Haas — and other players — and shows them the calls and dis- cusses whether they were actually fouls, first, and how to better avoid those specific instances if they arise again and he also shows them fouls officials missed — ones that should have been called — to help give M E N ' S BA S K E T BA L L : N E W S A N D N OT E S Tom Campbell Isaas Haas started the season as a physical, aggressive presence in the post. Seventy-one Purdue student-athletes received Academic recognition eclipsing last fall's total of 64 and 2012's total of 46. To be eligible for Academic All- Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners, in at least their second year at their institution and carry a grade-point average of at least 3.0. Women's cross country was second only to football with number of honorees with 19. Women's soccer followed with 16, men's cross country had 11 members recognized and the volleyball team had five.
