Get your gqom on with DJ Lag, the loudest voice in South African club musicright now South Africa has been put on the musical map before by Zefstars Die Antwoord, but now DJ Lag can be seen starting to seep into the global dance music scene, it's clear that South Africa has a strong, unique musical legacy, and one which reaches deeper into clubland than outsiders of the scene expected. Rudeboyz and Menchess released an EPcalled Rudeboyz on Goon Club Allstars last year, which was many listeners' first experience of gqom. The EP's massive hit 'Get Down' is a gqom anthem destined for greatness in underground bass, house and hip hop DJ sets. DJ Lag is leading the gqom revolution. Gqom is a style of music which originates from coastal city in eastern South Africa, Durban, and is a syncopated, boundary-pushing variation of the South African house sound. The word roughly translates to 'drum' in Zulu. Lag, real name Lwazi Asanda Gwala, has a dark, trap- influenced sound with heavy beats and echoing samples. On November 7, the Goon Club Alltars label will release Lag's debut EP. The self-titled EP contains four tracks of definitive gqom, and goes along with DJ Lag's European and Asian tour. This is unsurprising, as Lag helped define the genre from its beginnings, being one of the first artists to popularise the term. The tracklist of the EP is below. Tracklist 01. Ghost On The Loose 02. 16th Step 03. Ice Drop 04. Umilio African drums, techno beats and Portugese rhythm combine to form the unstoppable sound of Marfox The house pioneer is back after a well-documented hiatus ONE TO WATCH: DJ MARFOX The seven dates will take place between the 18th and 27th of November, making stops in Dublin, London, Manchester, York, Lincoln, Leeds and Glasgow. The tour will end on a high note, firstly with the notorious Leeds party outfit Back to Basics's 25th anniversary party at the city's newest club Church, followed by a very special, free party at SWG3 for Colours. The venues have been deliberately chosen for their smaller capacity; the tour will be a rare chance to catch the high profile producer, DJ, label head and visionary playing an extended set in such an intimate setting. DJ Marfox, AKA Marlon Silva, is one of the main exponents of batida, a club music native to Lisbon, Portugal. Colloquially referred to as the ghetto sound of Lisbon, it emerged from the poorest housing estates of the capital. As an originator of the sound, Marfox is still a leader of batida. His EP from earlier this year, Chapa Quente, unites elements of continental dance music like house and bass with African dance music like kuduro, kizomba and tarraxinha. 'Unsound' from Chapa Quente will please fans of darker tech whilst '2685' is the best thing on the EP – pure, timeless batida.
