Solange Knowles has always held her own in shadow of her sister, and that shadow isn't dark, it's shining gold. Her new album, A Seat at the Table, is a prime example of her talent and independence as an artist. The album features over 20 tracks, and all offer a lush range of funk, R&B, neo-soul and hip-hop creating a collision of creative content that makes everyone want to get down. At thirty years old, she is a mother, a wife and now a large part of the black artistic movement through this combination of musical and visual arts. She makes her skin colour and female form the art. Especially in the U.S with its current racial tensions, Solange's expression is peaceful and effortless yet offers a strong message of the need for black expression. Female self-love is important, and black female self-love is paramount in a world full of harsh beauty standards and racial ignorance. This is a perfect performance of black artistry, she shows that there is no need to adhere to any standard to succeed. Make sure to listen to the entire album, but for now listen to the most popular song, Don't Touch my Hair. Mmore at Guestlist.net Coops, the North London MC, is this month's one to watch. The track comes from his recent mixtape You'll Rate Me When I'm Dead Coops is an MC, who unlike the majority of popular rappers in the UK right now, doesn't consider himself a grime artist. His music is pure hip-hop, which is particularly rare on the scene. Although not yet perhaps reaching the height of his career, Coops certainly isn't unknown. He's already Supported hip- hop legend Nas, won the a breakthrough award and been co-signed by Vibe Magazine. Coops' music is certainly raw with mellow and simplified beats featuring in the majority of his tracks. Creating a 90s-esque vibe, the production is boom-bap inspired, reminiscent perhaps of early Gang Starr. His music does not sound dated, but rather these beats provide a fantastic platform for his lyrical prowess to take stage. Coops is definitely talented lyrically, with self- analytical topics and metaphors prevalent throughout his music. It can only go up from here as Coops continues to grow as an artist. The record is a bold UK-US link up as it features London based singer Christie on the chorus, the rising Atlanta rapper Nasaan and UK's homegrown talent Dot Rotten on verse duties alongside Kid Bookie. Introduced to the nation by Dot Rotten when he took him on Tim Westwood's BBC 1 Xtra show at the age of 16, Kid Bookie has since gone on to experiment and collaborate with top artists, like Lady Leshurr, Maxtsa and D12's Kuniva, showing that Kid Bookie is unafraid to create fresh sounds that cannot be boxed.
