Akala flies the flag for left-wing politics in rap
Akala is our hip hop artist of the month
due to his impressive string of shows
this month. Last week he played Lon-
don's Koko in what must have been one
of the best hip hop gigs this year. His
outspoken mix of hip hop and rock has
earned him a place amongst the hip
hop greats of our generation, with his
lyrics bringing a liberating, inspirational
message of anti-racist, anti-consumerist
politics. Akala was on fire at Koko, with
the crowd crying for encores. His UK
tour continues throughout this month.

GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS:
SPORTING LIFE
Chicago's Chance the Rapper has proven himself to
be a unique and vital voice in the current hip hop
environment of vacuous and uneventful lyricism.
His mix of jazz, soul, funk and gospel resulted in
Colouring Book, one of 2016's best hip hop albums
– top three at least. Listen to 'Angels' and 'No
Problem'. The performer comes to south London's
O2 Brixton Academy this November for two dates –
the 20 and 22.
'Court Vision' is one of the latest in a series of
independent 'future R&B' hits to make it big on
the internet, by rapper and producer Sporting Life.
The track, featuring Evy Jane, is relaxed, mellow
electronic R&B. The Harlem-based producer, also
known as Eric Adiele, responsible for the track, is
worth watching for many reasons. This glimpse of
subtle and shimmery R&B goes alongside Adiele's
work in rap duo RATKING, who've done pioneering
work in R&B and hip hop, citing influences as wide as
Animal Collective and Suicide.
