A
s the image of Purdue's football
schedule poster suggests, the
Boilermaker football program hopes to
"Ignite The Passion" in 2014. In mar-
keting terms, it is probably a reasonable
and responsible slogan.
It isn't promising anything more
than hard work by the players and
coaches and a true hope that the fan
base will somehow find a high level of
passion for Boilermaker football again.
And there is little doubt that some, if
not many, Purdue fans need a torch lit
when it comes to passion for football pro-
gram.
What coaches and administrators
don't want is the sound of crickets. If
the natives are a little upset … well,
they should be. But a fan
base that stops caring,
that becomes a problem
that no one can solve.
There is no need for promises of bowl
games and championships until a
team that can execute good blocking
and tackling shows up in a gold and
black uniform on a consistent basis.
And it has to start somewhere. Why
not Aug. 30?
Barring a miracle of fishes and loaves
variety, Purdue will have markedly small-
er crowds in Ross-Ade Stadium this fall.
Gone from the home schedule are Notre
Dame, Nebraska and Ohio State, three
teams that brought fans by the RV load to
West Lafayette in 2013. And it is unlikely
