So Coach Darrell Hazell's team will have to carry on this year with some level of anonymity, with home games played in front of crowds measured in the 30s (thousands) and not 40s. In the short term, the smaller numbers will weigh heavy on the psyche of Purdue fans who choose to attend the game, but it will only become a long-term prob- lem if the Boilermakers' effort on the field isn't commen- surate with improvement, if not winning. One of Hazell's strengths in the early going is he nev- er appears rattled. He is fixated on controlling things he can control and not worrying about the rest. That attribute could serve as key to turning this thing around. Hazell and his staff will be challenged to carefully push the right buttons, as our cover suggests. Our cover cap- tion should not be construed to suggest that all the right buttons will be pushed. Yet, Hazell's restoration project has been based on getting things in the right place so the right buttons can be pushed. Changing the culture has been a full-time job for the second-year boss, and like any strategic plan, one has to hope the necessary focus is on all the right things that will deliver success. Time will tell on that. But, I agree with the general theme that you will read throughout this issue: Things appear to be headed in the right direction for Purdue's football program under Hazell. If things are as they appear, then passion can be rekindled for a program that desperately needs to change direction. j
