question.
Purdue returns the majority of its linebackers, with
Robinson and fellow senior Joe Gilliam, along with
potential breakout sophomore Jimmy Herman. And it
has a couple of physically ready freshmen in Gelen
Robinson and Ja'Whaun Bentley who arrived in mid-
June and might contribute by August. The secondary
Tom Campbell
Linebacker Joe Gilliam won back his starting job in the
spring, but he'll have to fight to keep it from a couple fresh-
men this fall.

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH RUBIN CARTER
I
n his first year as
Purdue's defen-
sive line coach, Rubin
Carter has developed
a close bond with the
Boilermakers.
For Ra'Zahn Howard,
the product of a single-parent household, the veteran
coach and former All-American has given him a father
figure.
"Every time I've done something wrong, he disci-
plined me, and every time I've done something right,
he's cheered with me," the sophomore nose tackle said.
"… Coach Carter is a great man and a genuine person
in everything that he does."
Carter is vastly experienced in football, having played
at the highest level — he was a 12-year veteran of the
NFL — and coaching too, having spent 27 years as an
assistant.
Prior to Purdue, where he's in his second season,
Carter spent a year at Towson; he also has coaching
stops at Florida A&M, where he was the head coach for
three seasons, and in the NFL.
But Carter, 61, might be best known for his playing
days, as an All-America nose tackle at Miami (Fla.) in
1974 and in the NFL, where he was a member of the
Denver Broncos' famed "Orange Crush" defense and
helped lead them to two Super Bowls.
"The amount of knowledge that Coach Carter has is
astonishing," senior end Ryan Russell said. "There's
not a position or predicament or a block or a play that I
can try to explain to him that he doesn't already know
how to defeat. You really can't go wrong with Coach
Carter. He's gone through everything that we've gone
through and he knows how to succeed at it."
