Nearly 10,000 Purdue fans added to the festive atmosphere in the first game played
between the schools in the capital city in 30 years. On a beautiful night for football, long
snapper Jesse Schmitt got loose under the open roof of Lucas Oil Stadium.
One of the big plays early in the sec-
ond quarter was a targeting penalty
called against Notre Dame sophomore
safety Max Redfield after he went
helmet-to-helmet on quarterback
Danny Etling. It caused an immediate
reaction by Jim Bridge (lower left) —
the offensive line coach called for an
ejection. It didn't take long for the
officials to remove Redfield from the
game. Moments later, Etling came
over to the sideline to speak with
Coach Darrell Hazell and all seemed
well. At the time of the play, Etling
had completed all eight of his pass
attempts for 79 yards.
