Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memorable covers
while reflecting what was going on at the time.
There was a new star of Purdue football, as this cover indicates. On Oct. 3, 1998, an unseasonable cold, dreary day
in Ross-Ade Stadium, a sophomore quarterback named Drew Brees completed the closest thing to a perfect game in
the history of Purdue football. Brees connected on 31-of-36 passes for a school record 522 yards and six touchdowns as
Purdue rolled over Minnesota 56-21. Of the five incompletions, three were drops and none were intercepted. Brees had
enough time to relax as he sat out the fourth quarter and had time to be pictured without his helmet on in the game's
final period.
The Austin, Texas native finished the season with a still-standing school record 39 touchdown passes and the Boil
-
ermakers rolled to a 9-4 record and a Alamo Bowl title. It was the most victories Purdue would have in Brees' three-years
as a starting quarterback.
