GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 6 • 22 BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com A look at the top plays and players from Iowa's 24-10 victory over Purdue Saturday in Ross-Ade Stadium. TOP PLAYS No.3 It'd seem odd not to include Frankie Williams' interception return for a touchdown as one of the top plays because it high- lighted the junior defensive back's progressive ability to pro- vide momentum-shifting mo- ments — even if it, ultimately, didn't matter in a loss. But getting defensive plays that produce points directly — or at least put the offense in prime field position — likely will be a continuing necessity as the season moves on. Against Iowa in the first quar- ter, Purdue was in a 4-3 defense with the Hawkeyes lined up in an I formation with one tight end. The Boilermakers were in zone cover- age, allowing Williams to roam. Linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley had shallow coverage, and Ray Hamilton, ran behind him. But Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard appeared to only see a streaking receiver, not a streak- ing safety. Williams got a great jump on the play as he trailed it and took the ball 39 yards for a touchdown. No.2 By the end of the half, Purdue's de- fense showed early signs of fading, as Iowa cruised down the field to kick a game-tying field goal with 13 seconds left. The Hawkeyes kept the mo- mentum into the third quarter, using their second drive to go 83 yards before ending on an ill-ad- vised fourth-down attempt. Still, the shift was signaled. The Hawkeyes took a 17-10 lead on their next possession on a remarkable TD catch by Kevonte Martin-Manley, who beat corner- back Antoine Lewis in man cover- age and then just got his left foot tapped in bounds before his right landed out in the front corner of the end zone. No.1 That score essen- tially was the end for Purdue, considering how its of- fense was struggling. Still, the Boilermakers had a chance to seize back momentum. After getting the ball near midfield after a punt, Danny Etling lined up in shotgun with a back, two tight ends and two receivers. Danny Anthrop broke free off the line and beat his defender down the middle of the field. Etling, with great protection, simply overthrew Anthrop. It would like- ly have been a touchdown if the throw connected with the junior receiver in stride. Instead, on the next play, Purdue allowed an untouched blitzer to come free and Etling had little chance for a completion. Purdue punted, and Iowa scored on its next series to solidify the victory.
