GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 6 • 41 Purdue heads to the East Coast after a 2-0 weekend to kick off conference play against Michigan and Michi- gan State, although the wins left a lot to be desired from players and coaches alike. Michigan beat Purdue 25-18 in the opening stanza and took Purdue to five sets, while the Boilermakers dis- posed of Michigan State in four sets. "It's always good to go 2-0 and get wins in the Big Ten because they can be re- ally hard to come by," Drews said. "Obviously, we didn't play very well. We were pretty sloppy. Coach (John Shondell) described it as two of the uglier wins he's seen. At this point, just getting those wins and establishing our confidence is really what we're after." Purdue's offense has been solid through six weeks, ranking among the nation's top 20 in hitting percentage (.298), kills per set (14.7) and assists per set (13.3). Dave Shondell said Purdue still has strides to make on defense, in particu - lar in blocks and digs, where Purdue sits sixth and eighth in the conference. "Our blocking still isn't where we think it can be," Shondell said. "Com- ing into the season, we thought with our size and athleticism and experi- ence that our blocking would be a real strength. It hasn't been as strong of a suit as we thought it would be. "Our backcourt de- fense was an area we knew had to address. Some nights we've been pretty good, other nights we haven't been good." Friday's match against Rutgers will be Purdue's first Big Ten athletic event against the Scarlet Knights. The soccer team plays Maryland Thursday, three days before volleyball takes on the Terrapins. Drews said she expects the best out of both s c h o o l s in their first home matches in the Big Ten. " D a v e brought up to us that when we go to Rutgers, their play - ers and fans are going to want to burn the house down with the opening home weekend of the Big Ten and make a statement," she said. "Whether it ends up be- ing 100 people or 8,000 people, we need to be prepared." j LINKS PurdueSports.com: Tennis bows out in Tulsa PurdueSports.com: Soccer heads to east coach for first Maryland-Rutgers trip PurdueSports.com: Men's golf finishes second at Jack Nicklaus Invitational PurdueExponent.org: Runner has secret to success PurdueExponent.org: Volleyball attendance amongst top in nation 2014 SOCCER SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time/Result Aug. 15 at Illinois State (Exhibition) W, 2-0 Aug. 22 MIAMI OHIO* L, 0-1 Aug. 24 OHIO* W, 2-0 Aug. 29 BALL STATE W, 2-0 Aug. 31 SIU EDWARDSVILLE W, 4-1 Sept. 4 at Marshall W, 2-1 Sept. 7 at Youngstown State T, 1-1 Sept. 12 PENN STATE L, 0-1 Sept. 14 OHIO STATE W, 3-1 Sept. 19 at Northwestern W, 2-1(OT) Sept. 21 at Illinois L, 0-3 Sept. 26 MINNESOTA L, 0-1 Sept. 28 WISCONSIN L, 0-1 Oct. 2 at Maryland 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Rutgers 1 p.m. Oct. 11 MICHIGAN STATE 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Nebraska 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at Iowa 2 p.m. Oct. 25 INDIANA 7 p.m. Nov. 1 MICHIGAN 7 p.m. Nov. 5 Big Ten Quarterfinals # TBA Nov. 7 Big Ten Semifinals # TBA Nov. 9 Big Ten Finals # 1 p.m. * Boilermaker Challenge Cup # Boilermaker Soccer Complex 2014 VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time/Result Aug. 29 USF W, 3-0^ No. 14 SAN DIEGO W, 3-0^ Aug. 30 LSU W, 3-0^ Sept. 5 vs. UNC-Asheville W, 3-0 Sept. 6 vs. Elon W, 3-0 at Kennesaw State W, 3-0 Sept. 12 vs. Austin Peay W, 3-0 at Western Kentucky L, 2-3 Sept. 13 vs. Western Michigan W, 3-1 Sept. 19 ST LOUIS L, 2-3 MOREHEAD STATE W, 3-0 Sept. 20 NOTRE DAME W, 3-0 Sept. 26 MICHIGAN W, 3-2 Sept. 27 MICHIGAN STATE W, 3-1 Oct. 3 at Rutgers 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Maryland 1 p.m. Oct. 8 INDIANA 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at Indiana 7 p.m. Oct. 17 PENN STATE 7 p.m. Oct. 18 OHIO STATE 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at Northwestern 8 p.m. Oct. 25 at Illinois 8 p.m. Oct. 29 WISCONSIN 7 p.m. Nov. 1 MINNESOTA 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at Nebraska 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at Iowa 8 p.m. Nov. 12 MARYLAND 7 p.m. Nov. 15 NORTHWESTERN 7 p.m. Nov. 19 RUTGERS 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at Minnesoa 8 p.m. Nov. 26 at Michigan State 7 p.m. Nov. 28 at Wisconsin 8 p.m. ^ Mortar Board Premier, West Lafayette * KSU Owls Invitational, Kennesaw, Ga. # Holiday Inn University Plaza Invitational, Bowling Green, Ky. % Active Ankle Challenge, West Lafayette For daily headlines on recruiting and other Purdue sports news, check out
