GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 5 48 Stephens recalls, "He loved math, and he was so passionate about helping us all truly understand it. He always went the extra mile not only for me but many others." "The most critical period for students is generally their first semester," Schwingendorf says. "That's why being available to them is so important." As a tutor, professor, department head and dean, his dedication has always been to challenge each student to maximize his or her academic potential. Although he no longer tutors, Schwingendorf's spirited mark on Purdue can be seen in all aspects of his life. In addition to teaching, he is actively involved with Boilermaker Athletics, serves on the Purdue University Graduate Council that meets monthly at West Lafayette during the academic year. Schwingendorf and his family have football and basketball season tickets, and attend as many activities as they can. "There is a joy in coming back to West Lafayette and staying connected," he says. "Purdue is a big part of our lives." "Keith's support of the athletic programs goes far beyond just being a season ticketholder and a member of the John Purdue Club," Braughton says. "Through Keith and Lisa's gift, many future student-athletes will be impacted. And their son, Ryan, will reap the benefits of a lifetime JPC membership." Schwingendorf recognizes the next generation may not have the resources to make this kind of commitment. "I wanted to give Ryan the opportunity to be a significant part of the athletics programs," he says. "As a lifetime JPC member, he will have the opportunity to be involved in the same way we did as a family." "This is a great example for other loyal Boilermakers that want to continue this type of family tradition. This is a tremendous act of generosity and very selfless of Keith and Lisa Schwingendorf to support Purdue Athletics in this way," Braughton says. Schwingendorf stepped down from his position as dean and went back to teaching. "I realized that I was much happier in the classroom," he says. His love for student success is rooted in the belief that he is having a positive impact on them. "Nothing is more gratifying than receiving a letter or note from a former student who believes I helped them achieve their goals," says Schwingendorf. "You want to help these kids grow up – that's what you do it for." Herrmann says, "I owe him a big debt of gratitude for his expertise and guidance, and really appreciate his contributions to Purdue University." "I love what I do, and I can only hope the world will be better for it," Schwingendorf says. It will, Schwingy. It will.
