ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 2 125 f S W I M M I N G F E A T U R E : E M I L Y F O G L E BY TRAVIS BAUGH TBaugh@Purdue.edu E mily Fogle had given up. The three-time NCAA-qualifying swimmer had suffered a labral tear in both hips that forced her to sit out a majority of the 2012-13 season and eventually all of the 2013-14 season. She called her father, David, and told him her comeback to swimming wasn't worth it anymore. The pain was too much. She'd nev- er return to her pre-injury form. After such a promising start to her college career, it was time to quit the sport and move on. "I think when you go through an injury, especially an injury like mine where it debil- itated me for a long period of time, you're al- most grieving over your sport because you're lost," Fogle said. "It's almost like a death. I think that's natural to want to never come back again." Support from her family, coaches and teammates and the quality of Purdue's medical staff and trainers made Fogle decide to return to the team. More than 23 months after suffering the injury, she competed for Purdue against Miami (Ohio) on Oct. 17. She won both events she competed in, with the 200 medley relay and 100 breaststroke. "I cannot ex- plain how mean- ingful it is to me," Fogle said. "With the adversity I was given and had to face, it's that much sweeter." Fogle is trying to pick up where she left off as one of the most prom- ising swimmers in the country. As a freshman, Fogle twice broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke and the school freshman record in the 100 breaststroke. At the Big Ten Championships, she swam the breaststroke leg on both school-record setting medley relays and scored team points with fifth-place finishes in both of her individual events. She qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200 breast- stroke and earned Honorable Mention All-America hon- ors with the 800 freestyle relay team. "Right away, I knew what the team goals were and what the team wanted to accomplish," Fogle said. "I wanted to have my part in that. I think as a freshman you have to come in knowing that your swimming for a Big Ten uni- versity and Division I team and you have to want to play a part in that and not just go in and expect to swim but expect to score." Fogle was named Purdue's MVP as a sophomore after she finished second on the team with 13 individual vic- tories and earned Honorable Mention All-America honors Coming Back Stronger Fogle fights through lengthy recovery to return to pool RECORD BREAKER Emily Fogle holds three of Purdue's 14 school records in individual swimming events and has been on two of the five re- cord-breaking relay teams. 100 BREAST: 59.34 200 BREAST: 2:08.28 200 IM: 1:58.94 200 MEDLEY RELAY: 1:39.04 400 MEDLEY RELAY: 3:36.70 Tom Campbell Emily Fogle set three individual school records before hip injuries side- lined her for nearly two full seasons.
