ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 25, ISSUE 2 47 f because State kept winning after that game." In reality, the Boilermakers lost their next game, a nine- point decision at Indiana in a rare game when they didn't shoot well from the free throw line and turned the ball over 23 times. But seven straight wins allowed Purdue to clinch a share of the crown at Minnesota, setting up a chance to win the outright crown against Michigan on Senior Day. The Wolverines were young and talented despite hav- ing only two remnants of the Fab Five (Jimmy King and Ray Jackson) left on the roster. They fought Purdue to the game's final moments. In the end, it was the balance of having five players in double figures that got the Boiler- makers through. "We just refused to be denied," said Brantley, who had 10 points off the bench. "Other teams may have had more talent, but we hung together like few teams I have ever been around." With Keady's fifth conference title and first back-to-back crowns since 1987-88, the Boilermakers jumped to their high point in the rankings for the season (No. 12) headed into the NCAA Tournament. As a No. 3 seed in Austin, Tex- as, Coach Dick Bennett's Wisconsin-Green Bay team al- most pulled a big surprise, but the Boilermakers survived 49-48. In the Round of 32-matchup with Memphis, the Boiler- makers were not so lucky. In a back-and-forth game, a con- troversial ending sent Purdue packing. Memphis' David Vaughan's putback with 1.1 seconds left gave the Tigers a 75-73 win, despite Lorenzen Wright having grabbed and ripped Hairston's jersey to get possession of the ball. "Coach was mad at me for not blocking out," Hairston said with a laugh that might have taken 20 years to mus- ter. "Someone showed the replay to Coach, and being the hard-nosed guy he is, he said, 'Oh well, he still should have boxed out.' " It was a tough end to a fabulous season. Yet, as a coach often can, Keady puts it in succinct per- spective through the lens of time. "It was most special conference championship for us other than my first one in1984," he said, "because people did not think we could do it. "It was a special group." j PURDUE Pa n o R a m i c P U z z l E Gold and Black • 2605 Yeager Road • West Lafayette, IN 47906 • 1-800-876-4678 Visit the store at GoldandBlackDigital.com for this and other great Purdue Fan items! o My check or money order made payable to GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED is enclosed. o Please charge to my: o Visa o MasterCard o American Express o Discover Card No._________________________________________________ Exp.
