AUGUST 2015 nshoremag.com | 195 photographs by Artfluence FAMILY HANGOUT SALEM WILLOWS PARK There simply isn't a better place to bring the kids on a fine summer day or eve. Chock-full of the Americana kitsch we all secretly love, the Salem Willows boardwalk and park have been the site of entertainment for families since 1858. Between the arcade, the famous chop suey sandwiches, E. W. Hobbs popcorn, the beach, and the concerts on the pier, it's just plain old-fashioned fun. 167 Fort Ave., Salem, 978-741-4600, salemwillowspark.com R E A D E R S' C H O I C E S A L E M W I L L O W S P A R K FESTIVAL (FALL) ESSEX CLAMFEST Over more than three decades, this celebration has grown to be the largest event in Essex, attracting between 1,500 and 2,000 clam lovers annually. The festival highlight is the chowder competition, where 10 to 15 of Cape Ann's finest purveyors of clam chowder compete for bragging rights. Arrive at noon on the dot, and for five dollars you can taste your way through them, and then vote for your favorite. Restaurants are asked to bring 20 gallons of creamy, clammy goodness, but some run out faster than others. The festival also offers clam cakes, fried clams, local arts and crafts vendors, events for kids, live music, and a beer truck. Save the date: October 24, 2015.
